About the Blueprint

In the last 20 years there has been an appreciable improvement in the understanding of the marine environment. However, even with this improvement, public and private decision makers have identified that the necessary information does not exist to support good decisions in the future.

A comprehensive two-year industry-government-community led strategic planning process culminating in the Blueprint for Marine Science 2050 Report, identified the areas where knowledge gaps will undermine effective management, streamlined regulation and development of marine industries.

Blueprint for Marine Science 2050 Report

The Blueprint for Marine Science 2050 (the Blueprint) report is an independent, objective assessment of the participating stakeholders’ priorities for future marine research in Western Australia. In essence the Blueprint is the strategic plan for applied marine science in Western Australia for the next 30 years, with a stakeholder focus to ensure any resulting research agenda is guided by real world priorities.

Blueprint Refresh 2022-2027

The Blueprint Refresh 2022-2027 provides the contemporary view, developed with advice from key Western Australian stakeholders to refresh the scientific knowledge required to head into the future.

It represents six major marine science themes and identifies key knowledge gaps to guide future research initiatives and programs over the next five years that can be pursued by the State’s leading scientific experts and organisations.
