About the Program

Environmental offsets are actions that provide environmental benefits which counterbalance the significant residual environmental impacts or risks of a project or activity.

WAMSI is leading an offset project on the Pilbara Coast to provide the science needed for the Western Australian Government to make more informed sustainable decisions on these projects.

Mardie Minerals Pty Ltd is developing the Mardie Project in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia and has been granted conditional approval for the construction and operation of a solar salt and sulphate of potash production facility and provided financial offsets for marine and intertidal research.

The Mardie Salt Marine Research Program includes three major research components:

  • to map the original and current extent of samphire and algal mat on the west Pilbara Coast,
  • to identify and quantify the potential effects of sea level rise on mangroves, samphire and algal mat on the west Pilbara Coast, and
  • to identify the ecological roles, values and functions of algal mat on the west Pilbara coast.
