AMSA Annual Conference 2021 - Marine Science in the Anthropocene

We welcome you to the AMSA 2021 Conference: 'Marine Science in the Anthropocene'. Humans have substantially impacted the earth in the relatively short period of time that we have inhabited it. The impact is so profound that it is now geologically preservable. In a major conference for earth systems in 2000, Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen announced that because of our impact we are no-longer living in the Holocene but have entered a new epoch, now coined the Anthropocene.

2020 has historically been considered a year of forecasting for many international agencies interested in anthropogenic impacts on marine systems.  A year of assessing how far we have come and how far we need to go.

In 2021, AMSA welcome you to the Conference that challenges concepts and works towards solutions in a wide range of disciplines associated with the Anthropocene epoch. Symposia and speakers come from a diverse range of disciplines and backgrounds including research, industry, management and policy. This Conference is about blazing a path forward in the governance of today’s marine systems and identifying ways of maximising a sustainable and biodiverse future.

IAIA21 Smartening Impact Assessment

Against the backdrop of digital and technological progress, this conference aims to explore related scientific, technological, and governance developments to reflect on whether the impact assessment community is getting any smarter at bridging the science and art of impact assessment. Are we communicating scientific information appropriately across the various governance tiers and to all relevant players? Do we understand what the “right” information is for decision makers and, indeed, how data and methodological innovation are influencing decisions? Is this leading to a new era of impact assessment and thinking? Or do we remain in the status quo? These and some other contemporary questions will help address how we can make best use of scientific innovation to address current practical challenges.

Data Science Week aims to bring together a community of data scientists across the Australasian region to network and discuss trending topics and ideas. This is achieved through your blog posts, training, events, conferences, workshops or any other idea you may have.

Wirriya jalyanu (seagrass) festival

​Science meets Art to celebrate seagrass and the local environment with Malgana language and cultural heritage

The Wirriya Jalyanu (seagrass) Festival is the culmination of a two year collaboration between seagrass researchers at the University of Western Australia and the Malgana Rangers as Traditional Owners of Gathaagudu (two waters, Shark Bay). The festival provides an opportunity to share knowledge about seagrasses and the environment with the local community.
